It’s what sets us apart,
the thin film of dust borne on the tongue
we can never quite wash away,
those microscopic filaments that grow
earthward from our soles with each step we take.
The knowledge that gravity will root us, finally
and forever, in the clay beneath our feet
is why we teach our children
how to dance.
